AI Prompt Tips
The highest-impact AI prompt tips are: assign a specific role before asking your question; specify the exact output format you want; add constraints for what to avoid; provide audience context; ask for step-by-step reasoning on complex tasks; use "do not use passive voice" and similar style constraints; and iterate on responses rather than starting over. These techniques work across ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.
These 25 tips are ranked by impact — the ones at the top will improve your results immediately, even if you only try one. Each tip includes an example showing a weak prompt and a stronger version so you can apply it straight away.

Ready-to-Use AI Prompts for Prompt Tips
Tip 1 — Assign a Role First
Always start with who the AI should be before what you want it to do.
BEFORE: "Explain compound interest." AFTER: "Act as a financial educator who teaches complex concepts to teenagers. Explain compound interest using a simple analogy and keep it under 150 words."
Tip 2 — Specify Output Format
Tell the AI exactly what structure you want — list, table, paragraph, JSON.
BEFORE: "Give me ideas for improving customer retention." AFTER: "Give me 8 ideas for improving customer retention. Format as a numbered list. Each item: bold heading (4 words max), followed by one sentence of explanation. No preamble."
Tip 3 — Use Negative Constraints
Explicitly state what to avoid — this prevents the most common AI failure modes.
BEFORE: "Write an email subject line for our sale." AFTER: "Write 5 email subject lines for our summer sale. Do not use exclamation marks. Do not use the words 'amazing', 'incredible', or 'free'. Do not use questions. Maximum 7 words each."
Tip 4 — Ask for Reasoning First
For complex decisions, ask the AI to think before answering.
BEFORE: "Should I use React or Vue for my project?" AFTER: "Think through the decision of React vs Vue for a small e-commerce site with a 2-person team. Cover: learning curve, ecosystem maturity, job market, performance, and long-term maintenance. Then give your recommendation with a clear reason."
Tip 5 — Provide Audience Context
Describe who will read the output — this changes vocabulary, depth, and tone automatically.
BEFORE: "Explain what an API is." AFTER: "Explain what an API is to a marketing manager who has no technical background but needs to brief developers. Use a non-technical analogy. Keep it under 100 words."

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the single most effective AI prompt tip?+
Assign a specific role before your request. Changing "explain X" to "Act as a [specific expert] and explain X to [specific audience]" is the single fastest way to improve AI output quality. It activates relevant knowledge, adjusts tone and vocabulary automatically, and produces more expert-level responses than any other single change.
Why do my ChatGPT prompts give generic results?+
Generic prompts produce generic results. The most common causes are: no role assignment (the AI does not know who to be), no audience context (it does not know who it is writing for), no format specification (it picks the easiest format), and no constraints (it defaults to safe, average responses). Adding even one of these elements measurably improves specificity.
How do I get the AI to write in my tone?+
Provide 2-3 examples of your writing style and ask the AI to match it (this is few-shot prompting). Alternatively, describe your tone explicitly: "Write in a direct, conversational tone — like a smart friend giving advice, not a formal report." Add constraints for what to avoid: "Do not use passive voice, corporate jargon, or bullet points." The more precisely you describe the target voice, the better the match.
What should I do when the AI refuses my request?+
Rephrase the context. AI tools apply safety filters that can trigger on certain phrasings even for legitimate requests. Adding professional context often resolves this: "For a cybersecurity training course..." or "As a medical professional researching...". If a factual question is refused, try breaking it into smaller steps or asking for the academic or historical context of the topic first.
Do these tips work with image AI tools like Midjourney?+
Some do and some do not. Role assignment, format specification (aspect ratio, style), and negative prompts (Stable Diffusion) all apply to image AI. However, few-shot examples and reasoning-based techniques are specific to language models. For Midjourney, the most impactful tips are: be specific about lighting and composition, reference specific artists or styles, use the --stylize and --ar parameters, and use negative prompts with --no.
