Assign a specific role before your request. Changing "explain X" to "Act as a [specific expert] and explain X to [specific audience]" is the single fastest way to improve AI output quality. It activates relevant knowledge, adjusts tone and vocabulary automatically, and produces more expert-level responses than any other single change.

Generic prompts produce generic results. The most common causes are: no role assignment (the AI does not know who to be), no audience context (it does not know who it is writing for), no format specification (it picks the easiest format), and no constraints (it defaults to safe, average responses). Adding even one of these elements measurably improves specificity.

Provide 2-3 examples of your writing style and ask the AI to match it (this is few-shot prompting). Alternatively, describe your tone explicitly: "Write in a direct, conversational tone — like a smart friend giving advice, not a formal report." Add constraints for what to avoid: "Do not use passive voice, corporate jargon, or bullet points." The more precisely you describe the target voice, the better the match.

Rephrase the context. AI tools apply safety filters that can trigger on certain phrasings even for legitimate requests. If a factual question is refused, try breaking it into smaller steps or asking for the academic or historical context of the topic first.
